Earth Science 3-5: A Touch of Reality: Using Web-Based Interactive Simulations

Proficiency Level: Mastery

Grade(s): 3,4,5

Hours: 30.00

Description: Put away those boring videos! Bring reality into Earth and Space Science (3-5) lessons with free interactive simulations found on the Internet. Simulations allow students to explore the complex relationships between variables through interactive manipulation. Teachers may use interactive simulations to introduce lessons, teach a concept by tutorial, reinforce a concept, or as a review. In this workshop, participants will explore research in interactive simulations, discover sources of interactive simulations, create a lesson plan that fosters inquiry by using interactive simulations, and learn to evaluate the effectiveness of particular simulations at meeting the instructional needs of students.

Pre-requisites: This is an introductory workshop for teachers, technology specialists, curriculum specialists, professional development specialists, or other school personnel. Participants are expected to have regular access to computers, and proficiency with email and current web-browsers.

Objectives: 1. Discuss current research regarding the use of science simulations with K-12 students.
2. Locate and evaluate quality interactive simulations on the Internet.
3. Create a lesson plan that fosters inquiry in the Earth and Space Science classroom by using interactive simulations.
4. Evaluate the instructional effectiveness of interactive simulations.
